ABOUT
NaLHISA

Background

The National Liberation Heritage Institute of South Africa (NaLHISA) is an institution established by South Africa’s Liberation Movements with the main objective of collecting, collating, maintaining, and preserving all material produced by scholars, activists, and artists during the reign of the oppressive regime. This institution will assume legal custody of the archive material, on behalf of the people of South Africa.

NaLHISA is registered as a Trust and currently it has a Board of Trustees consisting of five members. The institute is non-partisan in orientation and serves as a centre for mobilisation of the youth and society in the construction of a more democratic and prosperous South Africa based on the ideals of our struggle forebearers. The Institute aims to be:

  • Inclusive of all liberation components and ideological persuasions as means to display the liberation heritage.
  • An expression of all forms of resistance and resilience that encapsulate the march to freedom.
  • A physical and symbolic representation of all facets of our society, such as gender, faith, age, and colour, that characterise the struggle.
  • A reconnection with the past, a constant celebration of our triumph, and a source of inspiration for the realisation of the aspirations of the majority nationally, in the continent, and abroad.

OUR
MANDATE

Establish and maintain a repository of the rich material that tells the history and the journey of the struggle of the South African people against colonialism and apartheid.

The nature of the struggle against colonialism and apartheid meant that there were a number of diverse parties involved in attaining the ultimate freedom for all South Africans, both inside and outside of the country. This means the story of South Africa lies with many different freedom fighters, liberation movements, scholars, researchers, institutions, and foundations across the world.

NaLHISA’s mandate is to find, collate and preserve this story for future generations in an accessible platform for all South Africans and the world.
